What if we took play seriously?

Square Play is proposal to create a different type of engagement in the realm of art, one of engagement through play.

The design is built around a series of moves mimicking the idea of play in the context of structuring, cladding, and spanning. Through a simple logic of rotating squares within a 12’ x 12’ x 12’ cube a set of spaces are created. The resulting interior space is intended as a place of contemplation within exterior perimeter is a play surface, on which the inhabitant can climb, perch, crawl through, and watch.

What if the budget was to be taken very seriously?

The building materials, in addition to being reusable, are limited to a strict budget of 5000 dollars in respect to the client’s wishes. The structure is made of a limited palette of reusable materials (standard 1.90” aluminum pipe), pipe fittings, and 3/8” bungee cords. Given the ubiquity of these materials, there is an ease of sourcing, lead times, construction, and availability.
